Punisher: War Zone released on DVD March 17th from Lions Gate. This follow up to the original Punisher movie highlights the classic vigilante justice hero from Marvel Comics. This time around, the Punisher is back with a vengeance in a film that is many times more brutal with lots more action and killing.

Ray Stevenson takes over the healm of Frank Castle from Thomas Jane, who played the Punisher in the first effort. A street savvy maker of justice with armor clad and no concern for other lives, or his own, Frank Castle hits the streets looking to take out criminals, gangsters, and others that the law cannot touch. His vengeance is personal after the death of his wife and son.

The Punisher receives a mixed review from the local law enforcement. Though on the surface he appears to be wanted just like the fugitives he kills, no one seems quickly to bring him to justice. Unfortunately, an undercover agent gets caught in the crossfire early in War Zone, which makes Castle a marked man with some in the FBI and with the dead agents widow.

Frank decides to put an end to his punishing ways but has one final score to settle as he looks to protect the wife (Julie Benz) and daughter of the dead agent. Of course, there are plenty of bad guys that want to get in his way in this action story.

Sadly, Punisher: War Zone was the type of sequel that does not work. It takes a nice character and well done original movie and tries to redo it. No one will mistake The Punisher for a classic movie, but it was a nice film and story - it did not need a second attempt. Stevenson works well as the brutal avenger (Seagal-like), but the story is little more than an excuse for overly excessive brutality and gruesome killing. It is hard to feel moved by a 'superhero' persona who is so ruthless in his ways. No doubt, this movie will appeal to fans of intense violence, but I'll stick to action in the way that it makes for a good movie.
